THE MAKIN REVIEW
A message from our trustees in response to the Church of England’s Independent Review
Following the publication of the Makin review into the horrific abuses committed by John Smyth, we are deeply saddened and distressed by the stories of young lives devastated, and the life-long impact John Smyth’s abuse has had on his many victims and survivors, compounded by the failure of many in the church to make referrals to statutory authorities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and survivors and their families at this time.
At CPAS, we have been providing Christian residential holidays for children and young people for 100 years. Central to our mission is our commitment to the highest standards of safeguarding. We have strong systems and training in place to ensure that all trustees, staff and leaders undergo thorough vetting, and all safeguarding disclosures are communicated appropriately. Independent scrutiny of our policies and processes is conducted by thirtyone:eight.
In the light of the findings of the Makin review, CPAS is conducting a process of checking our historic CPAS / CYFA archives to find if there are any areas of concern to be addressed related to matters raised by the review. If you are aware of any safeguarding concerns, either present or historic, please raise them with us by contacting safeguarding@cpas.org.uk, or if you would like to contact an independent body please do so at Safe Spaces.
